When not due to infection it is also know as eczema. It may begin at any age, and outbreaks often follow mental stress. Poor hygiene encourage dermatitis in the skin creases, as in the groin, toe clefts and anal region; and it may start as the result of chapping, from frequent contact with water, or as the result of chapping, from frequent contact with water, or as the result of irritation caused by a wide range of detergents, solvents and other chemicals. Constant scratching of the infected areas leads to thickening of the skin (lichenification). Dermatitis may also result from bacterial or fungal infection of the superficial layers of the skin. Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema, or eczema) Atopic dermatitis is partly inherited and is sometimes associated with allergic disorders such as asthma or hay fever. It often starts in infancy although it may commence at any age. The rash usually starts on the face, with itchy patches that weep and become encrusted.
